It is not unusual for a bereaved child or teen to "act
out" their loss at school. Grief may manifest as changes
in academic performance, difficulties getting along with
others, sudden mood changes, regressive behaviors or school
phobia. It is important for the adults in students’ lives
to recognize these changes for what they are—a natural response
to a difficult experience—and to have the knowledge and
resources to support students in the experience of grief.
To help children and teens cope with loss, PATHWAYS offers
educational program on grief and loss designed especially
for schools. PATHWAYS counselors provide in-service education,
consultation and trainings to schools on issues of grief
and loss. They will also present on grief and loss topics
in classrooms or co-facilitate in-school grief support groups
with school counselors.
