Play Therapy

Children naturally express their experiences, thoughts, problems or emotions through play. Play serves an important developmental function, assisting children with problem-solving, learning and expressing events present in their lives. Play therapy helps children cope with challenges they face. As a child plays, with a variety of toys, imaginary people or roles they may assume, the therapist witnesses or perhaps engages in the play. A trusting relationship is created as well as opportunities for a child to process their thoughts, questions or feelings. Play can assist in processing difficult events, such as death, in a manner that is not necessarily logical or verbal. The child begins to understand life events in a way that makes sense to them.

Private Counseling

PATHWAYS provides private, individual counseling to adults, adolescents and children who are grieving or living with a serious illness. Counselors specializing in grief and loss provide counseling on a grief therapy model. Depending on your needs and interests we also provide specialized individual counseling through creative therapies as well as play and sand tray therapies for children.

Fees, Insurance & Medicare
Family members of Pathways Hospice patients receive counseling, without a charge, as part of the patient’s hospice benefit. For other community members, Pathways provides grief counseling on a sliding fee scale based on ability to pay. This enables people to receive the care they need, regardless of financial circumstance. Some insurance companies do include grief counseling in their coverage, but we are most likely “out of network” and the co-pay may be higher. We are a Medicare provider for counseling and it will cover grief counseling on a case-by-case basis

Sand Tray Therapy

In this dynamic process, children use figurines, miniature objects, trays of sand and sometimes water to create worlds in the sand. These worlds can represent the unconscious or conscious life of a child. Because sand tray therapy is primarily a non-verbal medium, it can go beyond the reach of language to tell a story of loss to a caring and attentive grief counselor.
