Children naturally express their experiences, thoughts, problems or emotions through play. Play serves an important developmental function, assisting children with problem-solving,learning and expressing events present in their lives. Play therapy helps children cope with challenges they face.
As
a child plays, with a variety of toys, imaginary people
or roles they may assume, the therapist witnesses or perhaps engages in the play. A trusting relationship is created as well as opportunities for a child to process their thoughts, questions or feelings. Play can assist in processing difficult events, such as death, in a manner that is not necessarily logical or verbal. The child begins to understand life events in a way that makes sense to them.
