Grief in the Workplace
Pathways Hospice takes a community-oriented approach to grief support, knowing that death affects people in every part of our lives. As part of our comprehensive services, we offer educational programs, debriefing, support and consultation to businesses and organizations, to help mitigate the impact of grief in the workplace.
Grief from loss of a family member, friend or co-worker can have a significant impact on employee well being, effectiveness and productivity. In a The Grief Index Survey in 2003, 85 percent of managers indicated that their decision making was "very poor" after their loss; 90 percent of those with physical jobs, reported a higher incidence of injuries. In addition to the emotional toll it takes, grief is the underlying cause of billions of dollars in lost revenue to business, both large and small.
Educational Seminars
Pathways Hospice has developed presentation to help supervisors, managers and all employees gain a better understand of grief and loss. Presentations can be tailored to meet specific needs. Topics include:
- Understanding Grief
- Helping a grieving co-worker
- When a co-worker dies
- When a co-worker is terminally ill
Educating employees about grief alleviates fears, clears up misperceptions, provides coping strategies, and creates a more supportive environment. This can dramatically reduce the impact of grief in the workplace, creating a more positive experience at work and result in greater productivity and loyalty.
Consultation
Our grief counselors are available to consult with administrators and/or crisis team members in response to a death.
We can also help managers and supervisors develop a grief response plan to reduce impacts when a death occurs. Having a grief response plan in place facilitates timely support in an environment prepared to provide for employee needs.
Debriefing and Support
Debriefing employees and providing support following a death can be critical in helping them cope with loss. This is especially important following the unexpected death of a co-worker. Our experienced grief counselors can provide support both one-on-one and in groups.
